Nagpur lies exactly in the centre of Indian peninsula and is the third largest city in the state of Maharashtra after Mumbai and Pune. The region around Nagpur has its own distinct cuisine known as the Varhadi or Saoji cuisine. It is also known as Orange City, famous for Nagpur Orange. Several beverages are made from the oranges grown here. The Orange Burfi prepared here is also very famous, and people from across the country travel here to enjoy the distinct flavor of local cuisine. Here are some famous food items that you can enjoy when in Nagpur.

Tarri Poha

Nagpur is famous for its Tarri Poha and has many joints offering it, each having their own way of preparing and serving it. The most famous food joint serving Tarri Poha is Rupam Sakhare’s stall in Kasturchand Park in Kingsway or Keshav poha tarri in Deo Nagar. This dish is prepared with soaked flattened rice and spicy curried black gram or chickpeas, with the tarri on the side. The best way to savor the dish is by pouring the tarri on the poha, topping it up with finely chopped onions and adding the lime to make this dish alive. Rupam Sakhare’s aloo poha with spicy tarri is also amazing and something to remember for long.

Do not forget to try the Nagpuri samosa as well because this is the best part of the trip.  Priti Corner in Shankar Nagar Square is said to prepare the best samosas in this city. The samosas served here are first crumbled and served with dry curried chickpeas, tangy tamarind chutney and a sprinkle of finely chopped fresh coriander adds some magic to the snack. You may also try their Ragda patties. The Chhola Samosa at Samosawala near Nagpur’s famous Bada Hanuman temple is also a famous place offering this delicacy.

Saoji delicacies

The Saoji delicacies include fiery curries made with trotters, or chicken or even offal prepared with various spices such as black pepper, dry coriander, bay leaves, grey cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, and poppy seeds. Another must-try dish is the Keema Kaleji if you love your non-veg items. There are many Saoji bhojnalayas around Nagpur offering Saoji dishes, such as the Saoji Jagdish Bhojnalaya in Gandhibagh or the Om Shakti Saoji Bhojnalaya in Golibar Chowk.
